Too Inflexible for Yoga

Be Real

So I tried and all that, but there is no possible way to fit yoga into my days. Yet. I tried and tried, but when I said I was going to get some yoga into my life, I couldn’t follow through. It’s very annoying.

I remember distinctively being the most flexible boy in junior school when we had to do warm-up stretches before PE. Move onto secondary school and I was only bettered by two actual youth gymnasts in my class. I could do box splits, sit on the floor and teach over my feet to my heels, I could get both ankles around my neck as lightwork. Now I’m the least flexible I’ve ever been in my life. Fixing it is just a case of stretching daily, but I’m just not.

In a choice between lifting weights and a measured and purposeful stretch, I’m always going to pick the former. Doing that every time has meant that I’ve got into the habit of neglecting it completely. Where I thought I might be able to get the kids involved in the action, it’s just not feasible in mornings.

As a replacement for the morning activity, I got in the habit of doing a mini stretching routine at the end of the day. Sometimes. But I could really only ever do it literally within the hour that I’m due to go to bed. What good is that? Really and truly, you only feel the benefit of stretches (especially on your back) during the day. Sleep resets it. It was all for vanity.

It’s all a waiting game; a case of figuring out when the kids are capable of entertaining themselves in the morning. The eldest is live now, but the little one won’t even eat when he’s hungry, never mind leave me be when I’m stretching in his personal play space. I would request some recommendations of how other people have made it work for them, but it’s one of those where I’ve tried every feasible option and unless I trade it with work, it’s not happening any time soon.

I was meant to be reporting on flexibility gains by now, but nothing’s changed apart from a little less lower back pain. Watch this space.
