I’m not going to lie, Pokémon was a big part of my world when I was a little one. It was just what kids were into at the time. We were out in the playground swapping, scrambling and doing anything but play the actual game! I had a folder full of the cards. Now I think about it, there was actually a shop in Hockley where people would trade them. It felt like life revolved around them in 1999-2001. The toys, the TV show, I even had a Pokémon room with cards as the decorative border. If you weren’t there back then, you just wouldn’t understand.
It was probably my first experience having desires to be a collector and I had great links – I had an uncle that knew his way around eBay and went to America every now and again, so I kept getting the goods that no one else could at the time.
Fast-forward a fair few years and Pokémon hasn’t gone anywhere. My boys have been familiar with them for a while and I’ve caught them watching Pokémon Ultimate Journeys a fair few times now. That’s why we had to jump at the chance to see a preview of the new series at the Vue Cinema in Leicester Square.
Little did we know how much more they’d get from the experience. My boys:
- Got the most exciting goodie bag including STACKS of Pokémon cards
- Took part in loads Pokémon activities
- Enjoyed refreshing helpings of Pokémon Pop
- Met Pikachu!
And all of that was before we sat down to see a handful of episodes from the new series of Pokémon Ultimate Journeys. I don’t think I’ve mentioned it here before, but Marlo and cinemas don’t mix. We’ve had three walkouts thus far, but Pokémon had him hooked from the get-go, and he came out demanding I teach him the names of all the characters on his giant stash of cards. (I sense a new favourite theme heading to our household very soon).
