As much as I love maintaining my garden, I really can’t say that I have a desire (right now) to grow my own anything. It just doesn’t appeal. I’m just on a mission to ensure my garden looks in decent condition, free of patches, and in a state that doesn’t embarrass me (as it used to). That couldn’t be further from the truth for my grandparents, whose garden has forever been a fun place to explore for the many different things growing in it.

In particular, I recall many a summer picking cherries from the two cherry trees in their front lawn. Me and my sister used to go home with bags full of them and do impromptu competitive eating to see how many we could get through in an afternoon. While those were cut down a good while ago, their Bramley apple trees are still standing strong and now my little ones can enjoy them.
When it’s that time, it’s only right that we go around and pick the goodness and collect the goods we need for crumbles, pies and whatever else they can be baked into. The results of our latest apple-collecting sessions can be found below. Just know that, for me, that isn’t the fun bit at all. My grandparents’ grounds sit beside a golf course and, for as long as I can remember, I’ve been unable to resist testing my overarm throwing distance and accuracy by dashing all the throwing-sized apples over their fence and towards the closest hole.

As you can imagine, I find it hard to stop until either a) a golfer swings by b) I get myself a hole in one.
We must be over 20 years into this annual late summer/early autumn game and I can confirm, I’ve still never even scored once!
