J Cruz is a radio presenter on Power 106, an LA radio station. Last year, as ever, he had lots of musicians swing by his show. To lighten up the mood and fill out some of the space, he gave them each all the greatest children’s book the world’s ever to read over an instrumental. GoldLink, Migos, Jeezy, D.R.A.M., Ludacris and others all had a turn of reading the infectious rhyming book. The video series inspired me and I ended up buying it for Cameo’s first Christmas.
It was a present for me. Straight up. I saw the potential from the rappers that had freestyled along to it, and I needed to see just how versatile the words were from my own perspective. After a few trial runs and experimentation (most notably with a C Biz version) it was clear to me that this book was created with a ‘90s Memphis flow in-mind.
It was decided that Three 6 Mafia’s “Gotcha Shakin’” instrumental was the perfect bed to rap this book out, and I haven’t turned back since. The two were meant to go together.
As a parent, it’s very important that if you buy this book for your child, you rap the lyrics for them. Just say the words and you’re doing it all wrong. You need some flavour to bring all the goodness out of this. As I say, I settled on a ‘90s Memphis flow (mostly Playa Fly’s), but I’m sure that if you adapt your own favourite cadence to your delivery, you’ll do as good a job with it.
It’s the most valuable £6 investment I’ve ever made. Nothing else has come anywhere close. It’s fun for children before they can talk. It’s even more fun once they can participate too.
Anna Dewdney, you created a masterpiece.
